چکیده

The time-delay between the emission-line variations and the continuum variations of a quasar or Seyfert galaxy can be used to estimate the distance between the broad line regions (BLRs) and the central source, and this technique is called the emission-line reverberation mapping (RM). Based on the RM observation, a relationship between the size of BLRs (RBLR) and the luminosity of AGNs can be established. With this relation, the mass of the central black hole in the quasar SDSS J1148+5251 is estimated to be 3×10 M⊙. Based on the RM measurements of some high-luminosity and low-luminosity objects in recent years, a RBLR-luminosity relation over 7 orders of magnitude in luminosity can be determined. Some further prospects of RM technique include the 2-D RM, infrared RM of dust torus, and the RM in X-ray band.

Reverberation mapping is a proven technique that is used to measure the size of the broad emission-line region and central black hole mass in active galactic nuclei. More ambitious reverberation mapping programs that are well within the capabilities of Hubble Space Telescope could allow us to determine the nature and flow of line-emitting gas in active nuclei and to assess accurately the system...

Evidence for an InterMediate Line Region in AGN’s Inner Torus Region and Its Evolution from Narrow to Broad Line Seyfert I Galaxies

We have decomposed the broad Hα, Hβ and Hγ lines of 90 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) into a superposition of a very broad and an intermediate Gaussian components (VBGC and IMGC) and discovered that the two Gaussian components evolve with FWHM of the whole emission lines. We suggest that the VBGC and the IMGC are produced in different emission regions, namely, Very Broad Line Region (VBLR) and I...

The Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei

We review the basic observed and inferred properties of the broad emission-line region in AGNs, as well as the basics of the reverberation-mapping technique that can be used to determine the size and structure of the region. We argue that the current best evidence points to a multi-component line-emitting region, with a disk-like structure, possibly an extension of the accretion disk itself, an...

Variability of Active Galactic Nuclei

Continuum and emission-line variability of active galactic nuclei provides a powerful probe of microarcsecond scale structures in the central regions of these sources. In this contribution, we review basic concepts and methodologies used in analyzing AGN variability. We develop from first principles the basics of reverberation mapping, and pay special attention to emission-line transfer functio...

Testing Radiation Pressure Corrections to Reverberation Mapping Masses

Multi-epoch reverberation mapping of the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 5548, suggests that radiation pressure is not strongly biasing the black hole (BH) masses derived for active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The model proposed by Marconi et al. to account for radiation pressure in BH mass estimates fails to explain the observations of NGC 5548, the only AGN with reverberation campaigns spanning a sufficientl...
